Half a century ago, significant numbers of fashion conscious British working-class youths adopted a style that reflected both their attitude and tastes. Dubbed by the country’s media as ‘skinhead’, the look starkly contrasted with that of their largely middle-class peers, drawing heavily on the smart, practical and stylish fashions that had been introduced to the UK by the Windrush generation. And the Afro-Caribbean influence was even more evident in the music that provided the music backdrop to the scene: reggae.

To finally set the record straight about the mis-understood skinhead subculture of the late Sixties, as well as its oft-overlooked successor, seudehead, celebrated author, Paul ‘Smiler’ Anderson has collaborated with Mark ‘Bax’ Baxter to create the beautifully illustrated and exhaustively researched coffee table book, ‘Scorcha! Skins, Suedes and Style from the Streets – 1967 to 1973’ – due for publication this coming Spring,

As a companion to the book, the pair have also compiled a 7” vinyl box set of the same title, comprising ten 45s, each featuring a pair of reggae classics particularly favoured by first generation skinhead and seudehead record buyers.

Pressed on high quality vinyl and presented in sturdy reproduction Trojan-branded sleeves, the singles are accompanied by an insert featuring a fascinating essay by Anderson on the music and styles that dominated the much maligned and misunderstood subcultures that were skinhead and suedeheads.
